Is .NET/E Near?

WPF/E is near completion. But is it going to end with that?
I'm sure that implementing WPF/E for multiple platform also involve some sort of a common codebase and we're also seeing Microsoft taking .NET to new markets (The recent .NET Micro announcement). So maybe WPF/E is just a part of a larger project of taking a subset of .NET and making it work everywhere?

קיבלתי היום את מחשב ה-HTPC שקניתי במבצע שפרסם ליאור.
אני כבר שבועיים מחכה לחבר את הרסיבר והרמקולים החדשים שלי בסלון למחשב ולשמוע סופסוף מוזיקה (itunes) כמו בנאדם. כבר ציפיתי לסופ"ש של משחקים עם הצעצוע החדש אבלן לא תמיד הכל הולך כצפוי...

למתקין לא היה את הכבל הדרוש כדי לחבר את המחשב לטלוויזיה. לא נורא, כבל כבר אפשר לקנות...
חיברנו מסך מחשב במקום טלוויזיה כדי לבצע התקנה ראשונית ואז נגלה לעיני הנורא מכל...

מישהו במיקרוסופט חדש שיהיה מצחיק לתת לנו Windowes Vista בעברית.
כל הממשק הפוך ולכל התוכנות שמות מוזרים.
ניסיתי לתפעל קצת את המחשב אבל אחרי כמה דקות של נסיונות נואשים לזהות את המוכר ויתרתי.
אולי אני חווה בדיוק את אותה החוויה שאמא/אבא/סבא/סבתא שלי מרגישים כשהם פותחים מחשב?

בכל מקרה, ביום ראשון יגיע שליח עם Vista באנגלית. נפרמט, נתקין מחדש, יהיה טוב...

Russian Principal: Case Dismissed

From Microsoft-Watch:

Today, a Russian judge dismissed the Microsoft piracy case against school principal Alexander Ponosov.

A verdict had been expected today in the prosecution that started on Jan. 9. The piracy case drew national headlines following a personal plea from former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates for mercy in the case. Ponosov is principal of the secondary school in the village of Sepych.

Russia's CNews reported that Judge Elvira Mosheva dismissed the case because "Microsoft's financial damage is too insignificant for a criminal investigation."

Can't say its a surprise. And I also thought Microsoft's PR guys would know better...
I can't understand what was the reasoning behind Microsoft's decision to pursue this case when obviously they have nothing to gain but bad press. Can you?

I have to say I accidentally clicked the answer on one of the popup dialogs so I guess it isn't perfect yet...

Sweden opens diplomatic relations with Second Life

I read via vnunet that Sweden is opening an official embassy on SecondLife:

Sweden has established a virtual embassy in the Second Life online world.
The officially sanctioned embassy is designed to increase the country's profile among younger users in the web community.
A digitally created building will be based on Sweden's actual embassy in Washington and run by Swedish Institute staff.

"We are constantly trying to reach new groups of people with information about Sweden," Olle Wästberg, director of the Swedish Institute, told Associated Press.
"This is a very simple and cheap way to reach a large group of younger, educated people who are flooded with information."

Embassy staff will be on call to discuss tourist information, visa conditions, cultural issues and the country's history.

Few days ago, NetVision (Israeli ISP) announced it will open virtual offices on SecondLife.
It seems like a lot of people are actually using this platform, but just yesterday I read on YNet (Hebrew) that there are only 533 Israeli users on SecondLife.

Now, I've always considered myself as an "early adopter" who likes this kind of new technologies but I've only heard of SecondLife for the first time about 2 months ago when I was at Palo Alto and I just don't get the appeal of this kind of platforms (and games like The Sims).
In fact, 3D worlds are not new. I remember there were such projects on the internet when I was a child.
So what makes SecondLife different that it appeals to so many people (and now companies and even countries)?
