Power View on SSAS Multidimensional
Microsoft recently released a CTP of Power View on SSAS Multidimensional , (and yes, I know I'm a bit late writing about this, but I still wanted to give my two cents on it). So we're edging closer towards the point where Power View and Excel will be able to cover all of your viewer needs (or at least most of them :)). Years ago when I wrote about Report Builder on a cube and all the problems that that relationship created, I wondered when that would be fixed. Now that we have Power View...
Using a filter on a calculated field in Report Builder
A short and sweet tip on using Report Builder 1.0 So, my users are still using Report Builder 1.0. I recently discovered that using a filter on a automatically calculated field there doesn't work. I tried running a report where I ran a filter on a year generated filed of a certain date. In essence, I filtered on Year creation date = 2011. The report took ages to run so I took a look at it on the profiler to see the query that was run. Apparently, it wasn't even running the filter correctly...
Model Item Security and Identifying Attributes in Report Builder
I found myself needing to define Model Item Security on a Report Builder 1.0 Model I did some time ago. I followed the guidelines detailed in the Model Item Security page (you can read more also about Securing Models ). First of all, I would like to call to your attention that Model Item Security works only if your user isn't a Content Manager or Publisher (as noted in this article about Security in Report Builder 1.0 . Please note that it describes the process in the way it worked in SQL Server...
BI Semantic Model – the new solution for SSAS and PowerPivot
TechEd North America 2011 wrapped up last week with big news about PowerPivot and SSAS. Just in case you haven't read it already somewhere else, I'll give you a very short re-cap. In SQL Server 2005, the UDM was supposed to encapsulate the solution for modeling your project. In SQL Server 11, codename Denali, it's going to be replaced by BISM - the Business Intelligence Semantic Model. All the reporting tools in the Microsoft BI Stack will work against this model. In Denali, you will...
The pros and cons of Report Builder 3.0 over Report Builder 1.0
So yes, I'm still thinking about RB 1.0 vs. RB 3.0 . We've made the move a few months ago from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2 . Most of our projects in the team, if they're not cubes, are Report Builder 1.0 models. I was really looking forward to seeing how we can move our users from Report Builder 1.0 to Report Builder 3.0 . My conclusion? Except for a few very specific cases - we can't. We actually still have Report Builder 1.0 as a click once application from our Report...
Problem updating Report Builder 1.0 Model in SQL Server 2008 R2
So, as you may have gathered from the previous post, we installed SQL Server 2008 R2 in the municipality not too long ago. And yes, that led to all sort of problems... One of the main problems that all of us encountered, was that we couldn't update our report models. Yes, we could start a new Report Builder 1.0 Project. We could define a DSV and autogenerate a Report Model. But then, if we added a table to the DSV or new columns were added to an existing table, and then we would run an Autogenerate...
Error Message When Using a New Feature in SSRS 2008 R2
We installed SQL Server 2008 R2 about 2 months ago, and I recently tried to use a new feature in Reporting Services 2008 R2 . I used the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) to open a new Report Server Project. After creating a data source I also defined a shared dataset (a new feature to SSRS 2008 R2). I put some of the fields into a table and tried to run the report (still inside the BIDS). But I failed with an error: The report preview failed because the report could not be built. Read...
Amir Netz and Ariel Netz Talk on PowerPivot, DAX, Report Builder and PivotViewer
Ok, so the unexpected happened - about a month and a half after interviewing Mr. Donald Farmer , I got to interview Mr. Amir Netz and Mr. Ariel Netz ! I know!... You probably remember Mr. Amir Netz from his appearance in the recent keynote session in the BI conference in New Orleans. He spoke about what's going to be new in PowerPivot. When I heard he was coming to Israel for a conference discussing Panorama and PowerPivot , I decided I'd try to get a few more tidbits from him... In the keynote...
Dividing by zero when creating a fraction as a calculated field
I found myself recently trying to remember how a formula I wrote a few months ago in Report Builder. Doing the same thing twice, made me think I should put it on the blog, so that next time I won't need to remember it... A user complained a report in report builder didn't run for her, as she divided two measures and the report would error when the denominator would equal zero. The error message she got was: Semantic query execution failed. Divide by zero error encountered. --------------...
Report Builder 1.0 vs. Report Builder 3.0
The municipality has been planning to move to SQL Server 2008 R2 . Now obviously I'm happy about it, but it also made me wonder about our Report Builder 1.0 models. I know Report Builder 3.0 doesn't have all the functionality that Report Builder 1.0 has. In some ways Report Builder 3.0 outdoes version 1.0 and in other ways it's lacking. I was deliberating on how the move of upgrading to SQL Server 2008 R2 may affect us in the municipality. I mean, does that make our Report Models from...
Can't see all the rows in your drillthrough report in report builder?
I'm developing a report model in Report Builder 1.0 at the moment. I felt like it was finished and started testing the model with some sample reports I knew my client needed. And then I got the oddest thing… I would get a report saying something like: Gender Marital Status Amount of Sales NA NA 865 Male Single 30 Female Single 36 NA was what I chose to put in case I was using referential integrity. I was looking at the sales table and the employees table and if I found a sale which didn't...
Performance Point integration in SharePoint 2010
Microsoft had released not too long ago, the last Service Pack for the standalone version of PerformancePoint Services - PerformancePoint Server 2007 SP3 . From here on out, all development for PPS is going to be part of SharePoint Server . This is again part of Microsoft's strategy of empowering SharePoint as a product, as it also connects to Excel Services, Reporting Services (including Report Builder) and Visio Services. So what's new to PerformancePoint 2010? SharePoint Server 2010 as...
Flexible grouping on data from your DW in Excel 2007
I have recently built a data mart containing all the data of budgeting and accounting in SQL Server 2005 and created a Report Model in Report Builder for it. My users were looking for a flexible way to define different grouping on the data, without having to ask for my assistance. Defining new formulas in Report Builder isn't the most comfortable thing to do (specifically if they get complex and long), so we had to find another way. There was a suggestion of creating a view in the database with...
Filtering on a lookup attribute in Report Model
I've recently created a Report Model with a Lookup Entity in it. I saw to it that I had only one default detail attribute for it, and I gave that attribute a ValueSelection of list. When I used the Report Model, I saw the attribute fine (as if it was inside the main Entity) but when I tried to filter on it I saw the Lookup Entity I was trying to hide and a filtered list. I couldn't understand why that was. I went back to check the attribute. Its ValueSelection was of type list. I went to...
SQL Server SP3 Beta and more news
Well apparently, you can miss out on a lot of things during a two weeks vacation. Luckily I came back in time to see SP3 Beta for SQL Server 2005 get released! But I'll talk about that in a bit... The announcement of Project Gemini in SQL Server 2010 sparked a very heated debate in the BI Community, over how much it might be abused by users as an alternative to an organized DW \ OLAP solution. The discussion did not go unnoticed by Microsoft . I guess I can only sum up by saying that we'll...
